Mass Communication and Journalism
Conveying some information to a countable no of people who are close to one another is not a difficult task. But the same to a huge no of people who are widely scattered is not an easy one. Mass Communication refers, exchanging of information, to a huge no of people who are widely scattered, through mass media.
1. The first function of mass communication is to serve as the eyes and the ears for those who try to obtain information about the world. The main sources, to become aware of our surroundings nationally and globally, are mostly the internet, television, newspaper and radio. Our society relies on mass communication for news and information of our life, it reports about the weather, the current issues, and even the start time for games. Nowadays, news apps have made mass communication surveillance instantly accessible by sending notifications to smartphones with the latest news.
2. The main objective of mass communication is to achieve the target of the organization by motivating and influencing the target audience(i.e. employees, suppliers, creditors, bankers, agencies and many more).
3. Creating public opinion on any national or international issue is also treated as an important objective of mass communication. Mass media attempts to create public opinion by providing their audiences with a realistic picture of the world, activities of the leaders, governmental policies etc. Mass media also tries to build public opinion through special articles, editorials, and commentaries.
4. Mass media are sometimes used to exercise influence in international politics. Such communication helps to reduce the adverse relationship existing between two countries.
5. Combined and co-operative efforts of the mass people are essential to face an emergency situation like natural calamities & foreign aggression. Mass communication does the job of influencing people to face such emergencies.
6. Mass communication gives pleasure and amusements through the effect of sound, pictures & animation and creates an enjoyable social environment. Eg.-Cinema, Drama, Video clip, Short Films etc. On the other hand, Mass communication environment is the source of entertainment nowadays. So its purpose is maintaining the source activities.
7. When management tries to avoid the problems of the employee then mass communication highlights the issue and calls for an early response.
8. Mass communication tries to expand and implement educational programs. Primary, Vocational or Technical education is widely spread through radio, television, newspapers etc.
From the above discussion, It is clear that the objectives of mass communication are multidimensional.
There are various scopes after graduating in mass communication. Some of which are reporting, editing, photography, sound and video editing, public relations, advertisements, radio, films and many more.
To conclude, Mass Communication provides a huge scope with various limitations in it.
A communicator has several objectives or purposes in his mind to achieve through mass communication. The following are the notable objectives of mass communication:-
